Le Méridien Barbarons - Pirates' Legends - Seychelles It is known that pirates have used the Seychelles as an ideal hideout. A number of merchant ships crossing the Indian Ocean with precious cargoes have fallen targets to piracy. Among the famous pirates known to have operated in Seychelles was Olivier le Vasseur, nicknamed La Buse and his most important loot has been the priceless Cross of Goa, which is still being sought today. www.lemeridienfishermanscove.com

Somali Pirates attacking the wrong ship (French Navy ship lol)
Somali Pirates attacking the wrong ship (French Navy ship lol)
Oops.. wrong ship lol ----- From a distance the large ship on the horizon looked like the perfect target, ripe for a successful spot of piracy. But as the Somali pirates sped toward the vessel sailing near the Seychelles, they were horrified to see two boats and a helicopter set off from their target and launch their own counter-attack. They had failed to spot, in the dazzling sun, that the 'merchant ship' they thought they were intercepting was, in fact, a French naval ship bristling with cannons, radar technology and armed commandos. When the three pirate boats were spotted heading toward them the frigate Nivose, one of the ships patrolling the region as part of the European Union anti-piracy mission Atalanta, headed into the sun to camouflage its true identity before turning to confront its attackers. When the boats were close enough, Lieutenant Commander Jean-Marc le Quilliec sent his commandos out on outboards, with a helicopter to provide air support. The helicopter fired two warning shots to stop the three boats from fleeing and within minutes the 11 pirates had surrendered. Two of the attack boats were small skiffs which the pirates used as attack vessels and the third was a nine metre (30 foot) mother ship, used to transport supplies such as petrol, water and food. Only one pirate was left on board the mother ship which had nothing on board except fuel and potates, said Lt Commander le Quilliec. "He apparently thought the pirates had hijacked us," he said. 17 Suspected Pirates Handed Over to Kenya
17 Suspected Pirates Handed Over to Kenya
The US navy handed over 17 suspected pirates to Kenyan police on Wednesday. This brings the number of seaborne gunmen in jail in coastal towns in the east African country to 111. Somali gangs in small boats are challenging the world's military powers with ever more daring strikes along major trade routes. Operations are expanding towards the coast of Kenya and the Seychelles islands. International navies patrolling the busy shipping lanes are reluctant to bring suspects to their own countries because they either lack the jurisdiction to do so or fear the Somalis may seek asylum. [Ayub Gitonga, Kenya Ports Police Chief]: "The suspects are 17 and they were arrested on May 13 2009. They had attacked a merchant ship "MV Amira." The merchant ship was sailing to Alexandria in Egypt when it was attacked by the small ship and a skiff. "USS Gettysburg" came to its rescue and they managed to arrest the 17 suspects." Pirates from lawless Somalia present a legal and diplomatic challenge as well as a military one. Some of them say they turned to hijacking and hostage-taking because overfishing has deprived them of their traditional livelihood Kenya has agreed to deal with the detainees under accords with the European Union, Britain and the United States, but it has said it cannot try all pirates. In a move to try and ease any backlogs in hearings, police say the 17 would be charged in a Malindi court, 120 kilometers away from Mombasa.

The Frigate has been in service since 2008. The Frigate takes part in the European Operation Atalanta, fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Currently the frigate is on station on her second mission on which pirates were arrested for the first time. On August 17th 2009 the Louise-Marie left from her home port Zeebrugge towards the Gulf of Aden. The ship arrived at the port of Djibouti on 3rd of September and patrolled the area between the Gulf of Aden and the Seychelles till the 13th of December. She returned to her home port on the 23th of December. At 8 o' clock in the morning 14th September the Louise-Marie saved 38 Somalians from a sinking vessel in the Gulf of Aden. 8 Somalians were still missing. On the 3rd of October after a distress call from a merchant vessel the Louise-Marie saw action for the first time against a pirate ship stalking the merchant vessel from 300 meters. On the 4th of October 2010 the Louise-Marie sailed to the Gulf of Aden again. On the 14th of November the frigate picked up 6 shipwrecked Yemeni and Somalian fishers. Costa Allegra cruise ship loses power after fire
Costa Allegra cruise ship loses power after fire
More than a thousand people are awaiting rescue on the Costa Allegra cruise ship after a fire broke out on board causing the luxury liner to lose power. The ship is adrift in the Indian Ocean more than 200 miles from the Seychelles island nation off mainland Africa, an area that is infested by pirates. This is the second emergency situation this year for Costa Cruises which is owned by Carnival Cruises. In January, 32 people were killed when the Costa Concordia capsized after hitting rocks off the Italian island of Giglio. Seven people are still missing and presumed dead. The Italian cruise line released a statement saying no one was injured, and the blaze that broke out in the engine room in the ship's aft was quickly extinguished. A spokesman for the Italian coast guard said the Seychelles Navy is sending rescue vessels-- including tug boats-- and a plane that has spotted the Allegra's location. "The passengers and crew are in safe condition," said Commander Cosimo Nicastro of the Italian coast guard. "They are not necessarily comfortable because the ship only has emergency power on board, but they are safe." "The winds right now are blowing at about 25 knots but we are not worried because it is a big ship, so the weather is not a concern," Nicastro said. He said the Italian coast guard used satellite systems to spot nearby vessels that have agreed to assist in the emergency. A French fishing boat should reach the Allegra tonight. Another fishing boat should arrive by 5 ...

Philippine Sailors Escape Somali Pirates
Philippine Sailors Escape Somali Pirates
Philippine sailors of the MV Safmarine ship escaped an attack by Somali pirates on Friday. They were on a journey from Oman to the Kenyan port of Mombasa when the Somali pirates assaulted them with gunfire and rocket propelled grenades. Twenty one Philippine sailors survived the assault. MV Safmarine Captain, Jonathan Funa recalls the attack. [Jonathan Funa, Captain of MV Safmarine]: "Our ship came from Salala Oman but three days before the ship arrived here in Mombasa we have been attacked by pirates 180 nautical miles north-east of Seychelles. They chased us, attacked us and fired with automatic rocket propelled grenade. Fortunately we survived the attack." Despite sustaining damage during the attack the MV Safmarine managed to outrun its attackers and complete its journey. Heavily-armed Somali pirates have stepped up their attacks on vessels in Indian Ocean shipping lanes and the Gulf of Aden, capturing dozens of vessels, kidnapping hundreds of hostages and raking in millions of dollars in ransoms. Piracy has disrupted delivery of UN aid supplies, driven up insurance costs and forced some firms to consider routing cargo between Europe and Asia around South Africa instead. Naval forces from the United States, Europe and Asia have been deployed to protect merchant ships.

HMS Somerset returns to warm welcome 24.02.12
Hundreds of families and friends have greeted the Royal Navy frigate HMS Somerset as she returned from a six month deployment in the Middle East to HM Naval Base Devonport today. She's been conducting maritime security operations to safeguard the movement of merchant vessels in the world's busiest trade routes. Second-in-command Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Ben Aldous, said: "Our homecoming is a long and eagerly anticipated conclusion to a lengthy deployment. "Although Somerset is well-equipped and her ship's company well-trained, it cannot be under-estimated how well the spirit and moral of the team is bolstered by the support of family and friends at home. It is going to be an emotional day." HMS Somerset has remained at sea for up to six weeks continuously at any one time and visited Oman, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and the Seychelles. Whilst in various ports the crew engaged with their host nations on a variety of issues ranging from maritime security tactics to playing football; all of which served to strengthen international co-operation based on the shared need to protect maritime trade routes. The crew of the Type 23 frigate achieved some operational successes as well as providing life-saving assistance to stranded fishermen. Many of the sailors returning today have not seen loved ones snice before Christmas. As well as crowds waving to welcome the ship at Devil's Point in Plymouth Sound, families gathered inside the naval base ...

UCL Lunch Hour Lecture: Piracy: The Law of the High Seas Professor Keith Michel (UCL Laws) Somali pirates have taken to hijacking and ransoming commercial shipping while dozens of warships patrol the Gulf of Aden to repress their activities. Why do navies not just blow piracy suspects out of the water? Why are suspect pirates sometimes released? Who can put pirates on trial and why are European States transferring pirates to Kenya or the Seychelles for prosecution? UCL's Professor Keith Michel explains these and other issues.
